DVD Guide for German Films on DVD:
DVD Guide | DVD Region Codes | Blu-ray Codes | Films

Blu-ray regional coding is very different from the DVD region code system. For one thing, Blu-ray Discs have only three regions (A, B, C), rather than the six used for DVDs. But the really good news is that most Blu-ray Discs are released without any region coding at all.

About 70 percent of the Blu-ray Discs (BD) released in 2008 were region-free. Whether a BD disc has region coding or not depends on the movie studio that produces it. Paramount and Universal do not use any region coding for their Blu-ray releases. On the other hand, 20th Century Fox is the only studio that releases almost all of its BD titles with region codes. Most of the other studios (Disney, Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros.) release the majority of their BD films without region codes.

Blu-ray Disc Region Codes
Code Location
A The Americas (North and South, including territories), Bermuda, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Middle East, Southeast Asia
B Africa, Australia, Europe (including overseas territories of Britain, France, and the Netherlands, excluding Russia), Iceland, Greenland, New Zealand, Oceania, Southwest Asia
C Central and South Asia (India, Nepal), China, Mongolia, Russia
Note: Germany and all of Europe (except Russia) are Region B. The U.S. and Canada are in Region A.

Multi-region Blu-ray players
The first multi-region Blu-ray players appeared in 2007, but they weren’t cheap. Now, however, you can find code-free models for under $300. Most Blu-ray releases are code-free, but you may still want a code-free player for DVDs and the occasional coded Blu-ray release.

The Blu-ray format also uses various forms of digital rights management (DRM) coding to prevent copying and to control the use of discs.

Blu-ray players will also play conventional DVDs, but a BD disc can’t be played on a DVD player. Some Blu-ray developers have developed "hybrid" disc formats that combine the DVD and Blu-ray formats. This would allow consumers to buy one disc that would play on either a DVD or Blu-ray player, but the current practice is to sell some movies with two discs, one Blu-ray and one DVD (digital copy).

Just like DVDs, Blu-ray discs can also be played on a computer with a Blu-ray drive.

Is It Legal to Bypass the Codes?
Yes! See our DVD Guide for German - Part 2 for more on this topic.
