Here are a few hints and guidelines that you may find helpful for using the forum:

    1. Personalize your forum settings:
Click on Settings at the top right of any page. On the Settings page, select from My Settings, My Account, General Settings or other items in the menu on the left. Among other things, you can do the following:
    • Set the type of notifications you want for messages posted in the forum.
    • Select how you want the threads to appear, including how many posts you want to show per page. (That can also be changed while you are in a thread.)
    • Set the editor interface. If you want to see the formatting controls, set it to Standard Editor. If you don't want to see the formatting controls, set it to Enhanced Interface.
    2. Posting Messages:
To post messages most effectively, after clicking on 'Reply', click on 'Go Advanced' rather than using 'Quick Reply'.

We have just 7 simple rules...

    1. Please stay on topic! This forum is for discussing anything related to learning the German language or discussions of German literature and culture. (We also have another forum devoted to discussing the practical aspects of living in German-speaking Europe: The GW Expat Forum.) Also keep your posts and replies in the proper topic thread and sub-forum/folder.

    2. Safeguard your privacy! Please do not post personal information, such as your full name, address, phone number or email address. (Most people have a private email address they keep private, and a public email address for forums, social networks, etc.) We'd like you to list your birthday (with or without the year) in your profile, but you don't have to.

If you were a member of our old Delphi forum, here are some helpful tips concerning the things that may be new or different here in the AboutGerman.net (AGN) German Language Forum.
    • Folders are now "sub-forums." It doesn't really matter what you call them. The sub-forums are still like the folders in the old forum. See the main AGN Forum Start Page.
    • The new AGN "Welcome" Page. Although the Delphi forum had a "Start" page, it was only one page, and it was very limited in scope. See the main Welcome - Willkommen page for forum help, the rules and guidelines.
    • No ads! Registered users will see no ads in the new forum.

NOTE: This information applies only to Moderators and Administrators!

One of the innovative new features on vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite is the cross-publishing "Promote to Article" functionality.

In the spirit of promoting content discovery, we wanted to create features that will allow content to flow between Forums, Blogs, and Articles. For example, there might be a really popular post in the forums, but unfortunately it is buried inside page 13 of a thread. We will now have an option (if you have permissions) to "promote" a forum (or blog) post as a new article on the homepage.

Re: "How is it done?" in German

Both is fine but I think "ich bin geschafft" is rather used in written language whereas "ich bin fertig" is a little colloquial.
Another frequently used expression is "ich bin kaputt" which is...

    Hi Tierlieb,

I think that capitalizing Du/Dir (in personal correspondence) is still considered a little more polite.

On a similar theme, if I want to say: 'I'm done', should I say 'Ich bin geschafft' or 'ich bin fertig'?
