It is vocal pessimism; and may not even be actual pessimism but simple denigration of anything someone else might think is good and fun.

I really have taken a liking to this word and how it is pronounced. I was hoping it meant something along the lines of, losing the battle before it has even begun by having a pessimistic attitude devoid of confidence, finding flaws in your abilities and losing your will to fight because of this process of defeatism. Would I be using the wrong word?
Yes, I'm afraid you would. Miesmacherei is not about what you think of yourself or your own situation but solely that of others. The continual attempt to take the fun out of other people's lives.
