Theresienwiese, die "Teresa's meadow," the site of Oktoberfest in Munich
| The Theresienwiese, literally "Theresa's meadow," is the fairgrounds location of Oktoberfest. The locals refer to it simply as "die Wiesn." The Theresienwiese is named for Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (1792-1854), who married crown prince Ludwig I (later King of Bavaria) on the evening of October 12, 1810. It was their wedding party that eventually became Oktoberfest. The Bavarian phrase "auf der Wiesn" means "at Oktoberfest" ("on the meadow") - referring to the 31-hectare (76.6 acres) fairgrounds in the middle of Munich. |
