The German Regular (Weak) Verbs
All German regular verbs, also called weak verbs, follow a standard, predictable conjugation pattern in all tenses. Unlike irregular (strong) verbs, if you know how to conjugate one regular German verb, you know how to conjugate them all.

In the tables below we use the verb machen (to make, do) as an example, but you could insert any other regular German verb as well. To the example verb stem (mach- ) the appropriate ending (shown underlined) is added for each person. (Also see examples below.)

Regular Verbs with Connecting e
Some regular German verbs with a stem form that ends in -d or -t require a connecting e for endings that begin with a consonant. The verb endings are the same as for all regular verbs. The only difference is the required connecting e. Such forms are shown in green in the chart below.

The Simple Past Tense (Imperfekt)
The simple past tense of regular verbs adds a -te, -ten, -test or -tet ending to the verb stem. The simple past tense (imperfect) is used more in written/printed German than in spoken language.
