The verb nehmen (to take) belongs to a class of German verbs called stem-changing verbs. Such verbs have a vowel change in their present-tense stem form for the third-person and second-person familiar forms. In the case of nehmen, the e changes to an i, plus there is a spelling change as well. See the chart below.
