About this Song:
On the German song charts for 53 weeks in 1967-68, “Mama,” was originally written in 1941 by the Berlin lyricist and composer Bruno Balz for the German film Mutter. In the movie Benjamin Gigli sang “Mama,” and the song was a big hit two decades before Heintje’s version. Bruno Balz wrote many popular songs, including “Davon geht die Welt nicht unter,” “Ich weiß, es wird einmal ein Wunder gescheh'n,” and “Wir wollen niemals auseinandergehen,” the last two for Zarah Leander. As a homosexual, Balz was persecuted by the Nazis. He often worked with the composer Michael Jary, who rescued Balz from the Gestapo in 1941.
