As we mentioned in Part 1, movies in German are an enjoyable way to learn the German language. But the 40th anniversary edition German DVD (2 discs) offers a special treat! (Also see the new special Blu-ray 45th anniversary - English - edition!) One of the options on disc one of the German version is to view the film with karaoke subtitles for all the Rodgers and Hammerstein songs - in German or English! The German 2005 special edition DVD even includes a booklet with the German lyrics.

The new Blu-ray edition offers a beautiful new high-definition transfer and has many special features, including two different audio commentaries and an interview that reunites the grown-ups who played the von Trapp children in 1965. The German DVD offers both the original English and the German-dubbed soundtracks, plus Turkish subtitles.

THE SOUND of MUSIC: GERMAN SONG LYRICS

The Sound of Music began as an Austrian film that became a Broadway musical stage production that became a Hollywood movie. It’s a long story, but the short version is that the songs and music from this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic have become popular all around the world. The film itself has become a cult sing-along classic. Most Americans are surprised to learn that The Sound of Music was never very popular in the German-speaking world, especially in Austria! That fact makes the German lyrics all the more remarkable — and the 2005 Austrian stage revival of SoM (with brand new German lyrics) even more surprising!
