*Biedermeier: The term arose around 1900, based on the fictitious author Gottlieb Biedermeier, whose stodgy poems (1855-57) satirized German bourgeois tastes. The Biedermeier era of art, architecture and literature in Europe ran roughly from 1815 to 1848. The furniture style corresponds to the Regency style in England, the Federal style in the US and the French Empire style. For more, see the Wikipedia "Biedermeier" entries in German or English.
