der Brückentag (-e)
   an extra day off (a "bridge day" between a holiday and a weekend or two holidays, creating a long weekend or an extended holiday)*

Jedermann liebt den Brückentag, aber in diesem Jahr gibt es ihn nur am heutigen Freitag.
Everyone loves an extra day off (between a holiday and a weekend), but this year there is only one – today, Friday.

Der 1. Mai ist 2012 ein Dienstag, mit einem Brückentag ist also ein weiteres langes Wochenende mit vier freien Tagen möglich.
May 1st (May Day) in 2012 is a Tuesday. Thus, with a "bridge day," another long weekend with four days off is possible.

*While there is no real English word for it, an example of a Brückentag in the US is the Friday between Thanksgiving and the weekend.
