   mainland, dry land; Continent (Europe)

Sylt ist der Deutschen liebste Insel, seit Jahren wird sie immer voller und teurer. So teuer, dass sich nur noch Käufer vom Festland Immobilien leisten können – die Einheimischen sind fast zu Exoten geworden.
Sylt is the Germans' favorite island. Over the years it has become more and more crowded and expensive – so expensive that only buyers from the mainland can still afford to buy real estate. The natives have almost become an exotic species.
Man bezeichnet kontinentale (zusammenhängende) Landmassen als Festland.
Continental (contiguous) landmasses are called mainland.

Kleinere und verstreute Landflächen innerhalb von Gewässern werden Inseln genannt und gehören nicht zum Festland.
Smaller and scattered land masses within a stretch of water are called islands and are not part of the mainland.
