   all over the place, from one place to another, from pillar to post

Nicht jeder Mensch mag es beispielsweise, von Hinz und Kunz umarmt zu werden, und nicht jeder mag es, von allen geduzt zu werden.
Not every person likes, for example, to be hugged by every Tom, Dick and Harry. And not all of us like to be called "du" by everyone.
Leider sorgen die Fachhochschulen für eine gewisse Inflation, weil sie Hinz und Kunz zum Professor machen.
Unfortunately, the technical colleges are causing a certain inflation, because they make every Tom, Dick and Harry a professor.
Da fährt man von Hinz zu Kunz und erfährt dann erst am Ende, dass alles umsonst war.
So you drive all over the place, only to find out in the end that it was all for nothing.
