The "Night and Fog" term is a reference to a Tarnhelm (invisible helmet) spell from Wagner's "Rheingold." It was a directive (Erlass) by Adolf Hitler on 7 December 1941 that allowed the secret arrest and imprisonment of enemies of the Nazi state, usually in the dead of night. The directive's "night and fog" name was only used during and after the Nuremberg Trials.
