ausdienen (v.i.)
   to complete service (in the military, in a function)
ausgedient haben (verbal phrase)
   to have had its day, have become obsolete, have outlived its usefulness, have served its purpose; be a thing of the past, be finished/used up; (old) to have finished one's military service, to have been discharged (from service)

Der gute, alte Straßenatlas hat fast ausgedient.
The good old road atlas has almost become a thing of the past.
Nach dem Dreikönigstag hat der Tannenbaum in vielen Haushalten ausgedient und kann entsorgt werden.
After Epiphany [Jan. 6], the Christmas tree in many households has served its purpose and can be disposed of.
Das Analogfernsehen hat ausgedient: Am 30. April 2012 wird die analoge Fernsehübertragung via Satellit deutschlandweit abgeschaltet.
