das Meer (-e)
   sea, ocean; seaside

Wir wollen ein Ferienhaus am Meer.
We want a vacation house by the sea (on the ocean).
Morgen fahren sie ans Meer.
Tomorrow they’re driving to the seaside.

NOTE: There are three different words in German, each with a different gender, that can mean “sea” or “ocean.” See the “Related” words below. Meer is related to English/Latin “mare” (a dark, sea-like area of the moon) and phrases such as “mare nostrum” (a sea or body of water belonging to one nation).
