German Word of the Day > um > Hear it!

um (acc. preposition)
   around; at (time); for; approximately; after

Er kommt um zwei Uhr an.
He arrives at two o'clock.
Ich gehe immer um den Wald.
I always go around the woods. (...avoid the woods.)
Sie spielen um Geld.
They're playing for money.
Wir haben Kinder gern um uns.
We like having children around (us).
In Ulm, um Ulm, um Ulm herum. (Zungenbrecher)
In Ulm, around Ulm, all around Ulm. (German tongue twister)

NOTE: Um is one of the accusative prepositions in German, including: durch, für, gegen and ohne. It has different meanings, depending on whether it is referring to time (at) or location (around).
