Albert Ballin and Hapag
The German shipping magnate Albert Ballin was responsible for turning Germany into a world leader in ocean travel prior to World War I. (Ballin also invented the Mediterranean pleasure cruise in 1891.) His BallinStadt in Hamburg was an important departure point for many Germans immigrating to the USA. The BallinStadt Auswanderermuseum (Emigration Museum) opened in 2007, the 150th anniversary of Ballin’s birth, and offers genealogical resources. More from our German Way site.
